"You'll seldom experience regret for anything that you've done. It is what you haven't done that will torment you. The message, therefore, is clear. Do it! Develop an appreciation for the present moment. Seize every second of your life and savor it. Value your present moments. Using them up in any self-defeating ways means you've lost them forever."

My Attempt at PostModernism

I took Modern American Lit this semester and we did study postmodernism work.  However, the stories that we read were completely different than the Pink Institution.  This sort of confused me on how to go about writing a piece of post modernism work, but I think the truth of the matter is, there is no one way to write a post modern piece.  I have attempted to write a poem where there are three different stanzas.  I tried to keep the subjects of each stanza separate while making the entire piece about one subject (that's where the unity comes in).  Here is my attempt:

Commercial Institution

alarm systems blaring
winding steps leaving you
in the midst of nowhere land
noises provided by the stranger
guests awaiting downstairs
work work work
always on the go
never a day off
off the wall
constantly tied up
prized possessions fill
this empty carcass
a symphony of sounds,
lights, people, visions
none of which are
typically a home

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also would like to say a few things about the Pink Institution.  While I don't think this would be my first choice for a book I would like to read for leisure reading, I am glad that I did read it.  It completely took me by surprise, as this is a way of writing I had never really seen before, and if I did, it really meant nothing to me.  I think the book definitely had some interesting components, like incorporating documents from an inaugural ball and other historical documents.  However, I found it so difficult to really be engulfed by this book.  I like to emotionally connect with something I'm reading, and while I would be able to do that in each chapter, I found it so difficult to keep those pieces together as I read on. I kept having to go back and re-read different chapters just to remind myself of who was who and what had happened to that character.  I appreciate the experience of reading this but it just made reading (which is something I really enjoy) too much of a task.

Making a Difference

a wonderful, wonderful article.  This should be everyone's life goal:

“After that day, I said to myself, if anything ever happened to me, I know for a fact that I made a difference in one person’s life,” Gonzalez said. “I’ve done what I came to this earth to do.”  Sgt. Gonzalez from the Chicago police department.

Love, LOVE, Love Adele

If you've never heard her music, you've been deprived.  She has an absolutely amazing voice, only topped by her lyrics.  She is in every form a true artist.

"I love seeing Lady Gaga's b***s and bum. I love seeing Katy Perry's b***s and bum. Love it. But that's not what my music is about. I don't make music for eyes. I make music for ears."
-Adele

daily quote

"It is not wise to spoil what you have by desiring what you don't have; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for and one of the greatest things we all must acknowledge is greed destroys happiness."
Kiplimo Chemirmir

Sometimes these quotes really make me think, and I'm glad I get them in the morning because it helps me put things into perspective and start my day off in the right frame of mind.  I'm so grateful for where I am today.  A couple of years ago I never could have imagined how incredibly blessed I'd be today.

Good News!

I received an acceptance letter last night, I'm going to be published.  An article I recently wrote, on the growing epidemic of young suicides, is going to be published in World Audience Magazine.

I'm excited about getting published.  Being "in this field" for less than a year, I tend to feel a little shy about writing.  Anyway, aside from being excited about being published, I am excited at the thought that someone who needs the help may read my magazine and find an outlet in one of the sources I have listed.  If my article helps to save one life then that is the greatest accomplishment I could imagine.

Revisions

I really like the revision process and value the opinions of others, but this time they've kind of thrown me off.  I don't resent the feedback, but now I just sort of don't know where to go with my fiction story.  I had one idea in mind of how I wanted to proceed with it, but after the class' feedback I don't know if I want to do that anymore.

I think it might have been better to get my story out completely before we had people read and make comments on what they would like to see happen.  Now I just feel stuck.

I also have a tendency (even with my art work) that once I make something I really feel strongly about I am afraid to continue with it because I don't want to mess it up.  This is why a lot of my projects get started and don't ever really get finished, although I have been much better with it recently.

I had to read a book for my book and magazine editing class called "The Artful Edit" by Susan Bell and I found that book pretty helpful.  The first half was good and it gave a lot of suggestions on how to edit your work and helpful strategies and stuff.. I recommend it if you're open to new ideas on how to edit your work.  The second half drags a big but you can always do like me and stop when it gets boring. lol

Hey Everyone! READ ME and respond

Yesterday, I had a random thought, and I decided to post it on here out of curiosity, to see what others would say, as well as to get others to interact on the blogs.  We all have them, we might as well use them!

So here was my thought/question:

If you had to leave advice for someone who has not reached your place in life yet, what would those words of advice be?

Just Another Manic Monday

I'm exhausted.  I thought going to school when I was younger was stressful, but now it's even worse.  I have so many more things to worry about.  I go food shopping after I get out of class, I try to start dinner in the mornings or at least remember to take something out... I just need a break.  I'm exhausted!  We tried to do some home improvements over the weekend and a simple paint job turned into a weekend long project...I guess technically longer, considering I was at Home Depot 6:00 this morning!  Just one night I'd like to be able to get to bed at the same time as my husband.  Bleh.  Just a rant.

Stories I'd Like To Write

I realized that I did the post wrong and wasn't supposed to write about what types of stories I wanted to write but instead actually stories I thought of.  So I'm reposting, this time with the correct info.

5 Stories I'd Like to Write
  • A husband and wife buy a old house as their first home.  It is a fixer upper and while they are doing construction on the home they come across an album of old postcards.  The postcards give the couple a glimpse of what has happened over the years in that old house.
  • Two sisters have a pretty close relationship.  They do everything together.  Their family is small and consists of just the two of them and their mother.  One day while the two girls are at the beach the one of the sisters drowns.
  • George is a special boy.  He has special needs but his heart is golden.  One day, on a class trip to the pumpkin patch George picks out a green lopsided pumpkin.  Everyone else walked past it but he picked it out as the most beautiful pumpkin.
  • In an effort to not be alone for another Christmas a young woman takes a vacation to New York, a city with so many people you could never be alone.  She sees all the landmarks and city sights but still finds herself alone and jaded.  One stop, Rockefeller Center, inspires her to write a letter that will change millions of people.
  • An elderly couple who have been married for 55 years live together in the home they raised their children.  They were immigrants who came here with very little so their home never felt too big for the two of them.  Months after celebrating their  55th wedding anniversary the husband falls ill, and eventually passes away.  The wife doesn't know how she will go on without him, but soon it becomes clear she wont have to.

Revisions

Monday schedule on Tuesday totally F---ed me up!  I missed class but I'm assuming that we need to make a post about revisions, since everyone else has one up.

I really enjoy making revisions.  Wait, no, I don't enjoy making revisions, I enjoy critiques because I'm a perfectionist and nothing is ever good enough until it's perfect.  I really value other people's opinions on how to make my articles or poems stronger because ultimately it makes my work much better.

I feel like learning is not something that is just done in a classroom or at a school and when other people look at your work and offer suggestions they are teaching you how to look at your work through a different perspective and I really like the insight.

However, I hate revisions when I am told to do something one way and then that same person says they want it another way and I feel like I've wasted time.  As long as the criticism and revisions are helpful then I really do appreciate them.

Stories I've Recently Told

Some of my recent conversations have been (tonight was Idol so there's a lot about that in there):

  • There is no room for stage moms at American Idol! What the hell is that about?! They should not be allowed to have contact with the "performers" during business hours. It's like having a choreographer or coach there.

  • I really like the red head kid (Brett Loewenstern) on Idol. He spoke a lot about being bullied on his initial audition and singing was his thing. You know everyone has a thing. I'm glad he's made it this far and I'm always happy to see an underdog doing well.

  • A frequent conversation I've had is the struggle of going from being a two income couple to a one income couple. It's difficult, and I hate feeling like I need to depend on someone. My husband has done an amazing job paying the bills but I feel a bit guilty and we have made a lot of cut backs.

  • Yesterday, when discussing the American dream, I told the story of a man I worked with at my last job. He is from the country of Guatemala and he left his home land about eight years ago. He had a daughter who was eight years old. He has not seen her since. They talk daily but he has been here in America working for the past eight years and sending money back home where the money is building them their new home. His daughter is now 16 and when we spoke last he was planning on leaving this year to finally be back with his family where they would live in their home that is now complete.

  • Fortunoff used to be my favorite store to shop in. It closed down right after my bridal shower and it was such a mess. They had a great selection of home things and jewelry. Now they only have a back yard store open and it sucks because I live in an apartment and have no use for a out door furniture store. Boooooo!

  • My friend in Florida said they've been reaching 80 degrees this week. She said she is taking the kids to the zoo, I think that's great, especially since I had to climb an iceberg to sit on a bench on campus today. I can't wait for the weather to get nicer so that we can do outdoors things again. We're going to plan a softball game and invite all our friends as soon as the snow/ice mess is gone. Anyone up for a game??

  • Suicide has become an epidemic. There are so many young people taking their lives. It seems every day there is another article in the paper about a young adult/teen taking their own life. There aren't enough resources to make people know there is help and most of the time there aren't any programs until after someone has taken their life. As a community and as part of a society we need to be accountable and help do something to stop this growing epidemic.

  • There was a kid at school today who had his ass and boxers hanging out of his pants. My first thought was eww that looks so dumb, and then I realized he came out of the classroom I was going in. Then, all I could think about was, "I hope I'm not sitting in his seat."

    This House I Cannot Leave

My darling friend Christina found my other favorite poem--so here it is:

    This House I Cannot Leave
    by Barbara Kingslover

    My friend describes the burglar:
how he touched her clothes, passed through rooms
    leaving himself there,
    staining the space
between walls, a thing she can see.

She doesn’t care what he took, only
that he has driven her out, she can’t
    stay in this house
she loved, scraped the colors of four families
from the walls and painted with her own,
    and planted things.
She is leaving fruit trees behind.

She will sell, get out. maybe
    another neighborhood.
    People say
Get over it. THe market isn’t good. The advise
that she think about cash to mortgage
    and the fruit trees

but the trees have stopped growing for her.

    I ofer no advice.
I tell her I know, she will leave. I am thinking
of the man who broke and entered

    me.

Of the years it took to be home again
in this house I cannot leave.

    Two of My Favorite Poems

With all these classes canceled and this absurd weather it's hard for me to keep track of what's due when, which syllabi are being changed, etc. I think we had to post a poem that we like, so, here is one of my favorites. Another poem that I was trying to find on the internet but could not is by Barbara Kingsolver and the poem is called "This House I Cannot Leave."

    Forgiving My Father
    Lucille Clifton

it is friday. we have come
to the paying of the bills.
all week you have stood in my dreams
like a ghost, asking for more time
    but today is payday, payday old man;
my mother's hand opens in her early grave
and i hold it out like a good daughter.

there is no more time for you. there will
never be time enough daddy daddy old lecher
old liar. i wish you were rich so i could take it all
and give the lady what she was due
but you were the only son of a needy father,
    the father of a needy son;
you gave her all you had
which was nothing. you have already given her
    all you had.

you are the pocket that was going to open
and come up empty any friday.
you were each other's bad bargain, not mine.
daddy old pauper old prisoner, old dead man
what am i doing here collecting?
you lie side by side in debtors' boxes
and no accounting will open them up.

    Wonderful Quotes

I have a friend who sends out daily quotes to everyone he knows. Some of them are really good and now that I have my own place to post things, I thought I'd share the ones that I've saved and I really like... enjoy!

" When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life."
    John Lennon

" Your journey has molded you for your greater good, and it was exactly what needed to be. Don't think that you've lost time. There is no short-cutting to life. It took each and every situation you have encountered to bring you to the now. And now is right on time."
    Asha Tyson

" You cannot change other people, only your own expectations."
    Jen Chism

"Look at life through the windshield, not the rear-view mirror"
    Byrd Baggett

"A person who brings you more frowns then smiles is not worth your time. We all deserve the best, so never settle for less. Find the person who loves all of you for who you are forever, instead of a person who wants some of you for a moment. Remember your value and respect you."
    Mar'Tina Hampton

" We can throw stones, complain about them, stumble on them, climb over them, or build with them."
    William A. Ward

" Sometimes you have to stand alone to prove that you can still stand."
    Author Unknown

" Those who love you are not fooled by mistakes you have made or dark images you hold about yourself. They remember your beauty when you feel ugly; your wholeness when you are broken; your innocence when you feel guilty; and your purpose when you are confused!"
    Marcelo Mosaner

" I am thankful to all those who said no to me. It's because of them I did it myself."
    Albert Einstein

"The pace at which love is found depends on the pace at which hate is lost."
    Sintory

" Whatever you do, someone will criticize you. You will be blamed if you act and even if you don't act; if you speak, or don't speak. You can't keep pleasing everyone. If your focus is on finding shortcomings, either in yourself or in others, you cannot raise higher. Recognize that if someone gives a comment, reflect on it. If there is some truth, accept it. If not, then thank them and move on."
    Sri Sri Ravishankar

" Wealth is not measured by possessions or money... but by the relationships you build, the bonds you strengthen, the people you bring together and by the legacy you leave behind... that... is TRUE wealth."
    Brad Leslie

Blog Post #2- Ode Poems (Extra Credit)

    My Grandmother’s Love Letters

    BY HART CRANE

    There are no stars tonight
    But those of memory.
Yet how much room for memory there is
In the loose girdle of soft rain.

    There is even room enough
For the letters of my mother’s mother,
    Elizabeth,
That have been pressed so long
Into a corner of the roof
That they are brown and soft,
And liable to melt as snow.

Over the greatness of such space
    Steps must be gentle.
It is all hung by an invisible white hair.
It trembles as birch limbs webbing the air.

    And I ask myself:

“Are your fingers long enough to play
Old keys that are but echoes:
    Is the silence strong enough
To carry back the music to its source
    And back to you again
    As though to her?”

Yet I would lead my grandmother by the hand
    Through much of what she would not understand;
And so I stumble. And the rain continues on the roof
With such a sound of gently pitying laughter.

    The Excrement Poem

    by Maxine Kumin

It is done by us all, as God disposes, from
the least cast of worm to what must have been
in the case of the brontosaur, say, spoor
    of considerable heft, something awesome.

We eat, we evacuate, survivors that we are.
I think these things each morning with shovel
and rake, drawing the risen brown buns
toward me, fresh from the horse oven, as it were,

or culling the alfalfa-green ones, expelled
in a state of ooze, through the sawdust bed
to take a serviceable form, as putty does,
so as to lift out entire from the stall.

And wheeling to it, storming up the slope,
I think of the angle of repose the manure
pile assumes, how sparrows come to pick
    the redelivered grain, how inky-cap

coprinus mushrooms spring up in a downpour.
I think of what drops from us and must then
be moved to make way for the next and next.
However much we stain the world, spatter

it with our leavings, make stenches, defile
the great formal oceans with what leaks down,
    trundling off today's last barrowful,
I honor shit for saying: We go on.

I posted both of these poems because the subject matter could not be more opposite. The first poem by Crane is on a precious topic that is usually very close and fond to the heart. In Kumin's poem, the topic is something that no one would consider beautiful and yet it is written so eloquently. This really shows that poetry is a true art form and something beautiful can be written on just about any topic.

    PERSONAL INFO

So here I am.. me.  For privacy purposes I will not tell you directly who I am but I will definitely tell you about me.  I am a student of life, and more recently a university.  It's been some time since I've been in school.  I returned so I could fulfill a dream of mine as well as to find more fulfillment in my professional life.  I started out in the same place many years ago and I'm back to finish what I started.

    some samples of my work
I have worked as a graphic designer for the past several years and although I love to make pretty "things" I wanted more.  I still enjoy doing some graphic design work on the side but it was time for a career change.  I have an amazing husband who is my number one supporter and my best friend.  He's the kind they write fairy tales about.  (all together now: awwwww)

The last good book I read is Plantation by Dorothea Benton Frank.  It was a real page turner and I could not put it down.  The book contained a lot of emotion and was just a really good read.  I strongly recommend it to anyone who is in search of a good book at the moment.

Another book I really loved is Dear John by Nicholas Sparks.  However, after he  casted Miley Cyrus in one of his stories, I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that.  Oh, and I love, love, love Dear Abby.
